Everyone wants to talk about the idea. The idea is the cheap part. The idea will not answer the phone at 9pm when the order is wrong and the customer is right and you are out of the thing you promised. The work answers the phone.

The unglamorous thing

There is a version of you that wants the year to be a story you'll tell later. Skip that. The year is a stack of small, unglamorous decisions made correctly, on days you didn't feel like it. That's the whole secret, and it's not a secret, which is why nobody does it.

Show up. Do the next right thing. Do it again tomorrow. The compounding is invisible until, one day, it isn't.

Nobody is coming. The cavalry is you — tired, at 4am, doing the unglamorous thing again. That's not a tragedy. That's the job. And if you can learn to find a strange quiet in it, you'll outlast people far more talented than you.
