The Four Gifts — The Mind, a Backyard Brew story by R.Solace (Ryan Khalil)

My boys,

A friend of mine once shared something with me… and it stayed with me.

He told me that in his culture, when you are born—

You are given four gifts.

And your responsibility in this life is to grow into them.

Not all at once. Not overnight.

But over time.

Through living. Through learning. Through experience.

The first gift—

Is knowledge.

Not just to collect it…

But to understand it.

To apply it.

To turn it into something real.

Because knowledge alone means nothing

if you can't live it.

The second gift—

Is feeling.

Your natural intuition.

Your ability to experience emotion fully.

Not to run from it. Not to suppress it.

But to hold it.

To feel deeply—

Even when it's uncomfortable.

Even when it's heavy.

Because strength isn't the absence of emotion.

It's the ability to carry it.

The third gift—

Is reflection.

He explained it to me like this:

In the morning, the sun rises—

And just like it bathes the earth… it bathes us too.

And we go to the water.

Because the water reflects the light— and shows us what is there.

What was hidden becomes seen.

And as the day moves on…

And the sun begins to set—

That same light fades.

And what was once clear can disappear again.

And that's like us.

If you quiet yourself…

If you give yourself space—

Your inner voice starts to come forward.

It shows you who you are.

It reveals the truth you've been avoiding.

That feeling in your gut—

That's where it comes from.

But you can only hear it when you slow down.

The fourth gift—

Is guardianship.

To watch over the earth.

To understand that this life…

This world…

Is not just yours to take from.

It's yours to protect.

To care for.

To leave better than you found it.

Because we're not just here to exist.

We're here to take responsibility.

And when you begin to live all four of these—

Knowledge. Feeling. Reflection. Guardianship.

You don't just grow…

You become complete.

Not perfect.

But aware.

Grounded.

Whole.

So take your time with this.

These gifts aren't meant to be rushed.

They're meant to be lived.

I love you.

— Baba

Question: Which of these gifts are you developing… and which ones have you been avoiding?
