Entry No. 044 · The Raw
Hold The Family Together
A Backyard Brew Story
By Ryan Khalil (R.Solace) · May 1, 2026 · 3 min read

My boys,
There's something I need you to understand early…
Keeping a family together is hard work.
Real hard work.
And most people don't fully understand that until they're the one trying to do it.
When families feel strong… connected… close…
It usually isn't happening by accident.
Someone is trying.
Someone is calling. Someone is checking in. Someone is planning. Someone is forgiving. Someone is choosing to keep showing up.
In our family—
That person was your grandmother.
Your grandmother was the glue.
She carried something that held everyone together in ways I don't think all of us fully understood until she was gone.
And when she passed…
Something changed.
I felt it deeply.
I felt like it became my responsibility…
My duty…
To try and keep the family together.
And if I'm being honest—
That has been one of the hardest things I've ever tried to do.
Because one person cannot hold everything together alone.
Not forever.
A family…
A real family…
Requires effort from everyone.
Every person matters.
Every call matters. Every visit matters. Every moment of grace matters.
I've expressed this to my brothers…
Your uncles.
To your grandfather.
I've tried to explain how hard it can feel when you're carrying so much of that weight by yourself.
And sometimes…
I won't lie…
It can feel like nobody else wants to try.
Like maybe you care more than everyone else.
And that feeling…
Can be exhausting.
But here's what I need you to hear:
Do not give up.
Keep trying.
Because family—
When it's healthy… when it's real…
Is worth fighting for.
Not every battle will be won immediately.
Not every effort will be returned equally.
But that doesn't mean you stop trying.
Sometimes leadership looks like being the one who keeps showing up even when it's hard.
Sometimes love looks like being the one who keeps reaching out even when it's inconvenient.
And maybe…
Just maybe…
Your effort becomes the reminder others need.
So if you ever find yourself in that position one day—
Trying to hold something meaningful together…
Don't quit too soon.
Because even if it feels heavy…
You may be carrying something sacred.
And if everyone eventually chooses to carry it too—
That's how families survive.
I love you.
— Baba
Question: Are you contributing to keeping your family strong… or assuming someone else will do it?
Moral: Family stays together through shared effort—but even one person refusing to quit can keep hope alive.
